The TSSAA Board of Control passed a proposal that requires a heat policy for all its member schools. The requirements of the policy include adjustments which must be made for activities depending on the heat index at the location where the activities take place.
The TSSAA Heat policy is the minimum standard that member schools must follow.
The TSSAA Heat policy will prohibit schools from practicing when the heat index at the location of the activity is in excess of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Member schools must be in compliance with this policy beginning with the 2009-2010 TSSAA Fall Sports first practice dates. See chart summarizing the required adjustments for specific heat indexes.
Guidelines for Understanding the Recruiting Rule:
1. Athletes or prospective athletes should be treated no differently than students who are not athletes. Students should be seen as students and not singled out based on their potential athletic ability.
2. To avoid the appearance of impropriety, a coach who is contacted by any student or family or individual about attending a school where he or she is the coach should inform that person that he or she needs to contact the administrative official or officials of the school who normally deal with the admissions process.
3. To avoid the appearance of impropriety, any meeting with coaches regarding athletes or prospective athletes should be part of the admissions process at the school and should take place at the school.
The Board of Control will meet on Tuesday, March 17 at 1:00 pm at the Embassy Suites Hotel & Conference Center in Murfreesboro.
The Legislative Council will meet on Wednesday, March 18 at 8:00 a.m. at the same site.
The following are the agendas for both meetings:
The 2009 TSSAA Hall of Fame inductees have been selected. Thirteen new members will be inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame at the annual luncheon at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center in Murfreesboro on Saturday, April 18, 2009.
Four administrators, five coaches, three officials, and a contributor will be inducted that day to join others in the annual gathering of those selected since the process began in 1982.
The 2009 track and field rules meetings will not be held in the seven geographic
locations. The track and field rules meetings will be put online and all coaches may
access the online program beginning February 2, 2009. Track and field rules meeting
information will be online and all coaches will be required to go online and complete the
requirements.
There are very few changes in track and field for this spring and we felt that this would
be a cutback that would be beneficial to both schools and coaches in terms of travel
expenses.
Ronnie Carter, Executive Director of TSSAA, announced at the January 8, 2009 Board of Control meeting that he will retire in June 2009. Carter is the third Executive Director in the association’s history and was preceded by Gill Gideon (1972-86) and the association’s first director, Mr. A.F. Bridges (1946-72).
Mr. Carter joined the TSSAA in 1978 as an Assistant Executive Director. He was named Executive Director in 1986. He is the fifth longest tenured active Executive Director in the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations). Since he was hired in 1978, he has seen approximately 180 executive directors at the other 50 state high school associations. Only two other NFHS member state associations have had three or fewer executive directors than TSSAA since their associations were formed. The Connecticut association, which hired their first director in 1969, is currently on their second director and the Rhode Island association, which hired their first director in 1968, is currently on their third director.
