“Are We There Yet?” Getting to Knoxville Steve Wills Oct 21, 2010

This is my third story about that meet. Jasen and Marty ask me to do this as they seem to think I have a “gift for gab” - they are surely correct - and, to be honest, I enjoy using words and turning a phrase, even if I could surely benefit by more schooling and practice, “coaching”, as it were.

The title of Erich Maria Remarque’s great novel about World War I, Im Westen Nichts Neues,

known in English as, All Quiet on the Western Front, would suffice as a current situation report

from the western end of the State.  So it is now, just 3 days away from West Tennessee Middle

School Cross Country Regional Championship (WTMSXCRC).  Here, in the western end of

the state, there is nothing new.  Other than the persistent sound of raindrops arriving at the

surface, it is very quiet around here.

Tennessee Middle Schoolers are Ready to RUMBLE! Steve Wills Oct 15, 2008

On Saturday morning, when the rumble begins at Victor Ashe Park in Knoxville, it won't be Zeus who's bringing down that thunder, nor Thor or even good ol' Notre Dame.  It won’t even be the drum section of the UT Volunteer Marching Band warming up for halftime of the game against Mississippi State.

The shuddering of the ground will be from a stampede of middle school runners the likes of which should have (many) high school coaches salivating about their own future squads and offer hope to fans about the future of distance running in both Tennessee and the United States.  New faces and old – old being a relative term in this age group – will lace ‘em up and line ‘em up as they race for the title at the 2008 Tennessee Middle School Cross Country State Championship Meet.  Already, both the team and individual competition look to be fierce.
