What Stands Out

The Gryphons of St. George's Independent School are on the three year championship streak. For their 2020 championship, top runner and defending individual champion Allison Newman showed up to Sanders Ferry in a walking boot and didn't race. Their second best runner, Lauren Rutlin, went up the final hill with less than half a mile to go challenging for the lead and never finished. I say this to point out that they still won the championship that season. They do not have as much breathing room this year. In fact, they have just five runners right now with a documented time so if there is an unfortunate circumstance that occurs and someone cannot race, they will not score as a team. Even if someone just races poorly, Columbia Academy and USN are well within striking distance to capitalize on a poor performance. The simple matter of this classification is athletes are hard to come by at schools of this size or rather to find the bandwidth for the athletes you have in the school to contribute to your sport. Take University School of Jackson for instance. In the spring their girls won the 4x800m at state by 20 seconds. Based on what I can tell on social media, in the fall, all of these girls play soccer. I'm sure there are girls are situations in all of these programs where athletes will only show up for regionals and state which would sway these rankings drastically if you can just plug in 2 girls who can run under 22 on loan for a couple of weeks at the end of the season.
