Prior to Wednesday, the girls 400m dash had a messy history. The recognized state record of 54.54 was a converted time from 1979 and the fastest modern times were shared by multiple athletes and the database record of 53.63 was run during club season. None of that matters any more now as Dreame Williams beat all of those times with this run of 53.44.
Record Keeping - Updated 5/23/2025
If you visit the TSSAA Sports website, you can view the Regular Season Records for Girl's Track and Field. It's outdated and is also a grab bag of performances without specification of location or meet association. I took it upon myself in 2019 audit the history of the TSSAA State Championship Results in order to create a TSSAA State Meet Record Book that consolidated the best performances from that meet. There is evidence and rationale in that article if you'd like to go back and read that I used while performing the research. It's still not perfect but as we continue to lower these times with official wind-readings and modern timing it continues to improve.
A couple of years later, I looked into creating an All-Time Record Book but what I found is there is a disconnect between what is the listed record on the TSSAA Website is and what the "community" considers to be a record. For instance, last spring, Caroline Weems of St. Agnes vaulted 13-1 at a meet in Bartlett. This mark surpassed the height listed on the TSSAA website for Brittany Bishop at 13-0. When I mentioned that to her vault coach from Memphis Vault Club the response was, "The State Record is 13-3.5." That is a mark that Bishop vaulted at the East Tennessee Jamboree in 2019. That's what the vault community recognizes as the record. Could Weems have submitted the paper work and supplanted Bishop on the TSSAA Website? Yes. Did they? No. The same can be said about the 3200m record on the girls side as well. The listed record is 10:21 even though six girls have run faster times.
All this is to say, I didn't make it very far in my efforts to improve the All-Time Record Book as I would likely defer to recognize whatever "the community" considers it to be.
So here is a side by side look at the #1 marks in our database next to the TSSAA State Meet Record.
