Brentwood, Memphis Central: Why They Won D-I Class AAA

Memphis Central

A Historic Performance

After the way last season ended for the Warriors, motivation was not going to be an issue for this team. Memphis Central only lost two seniors to graduation with Khalid White being the only one that scored any individual points at state in 2021. We knew they were going to be good. This point total and how it stacks up against history illustrates just how good.

On May 26th, Memphis Central became the first Division I Boys team to surpass 100 points in the largest competitive division at the State Championship. The closest previous total was Brentwood High School in 2008 who scored 94. Even though Jordan Ware may have been the most visible of these athletes, his 25 points was actually the second highest total output by a Warrior for the competition. Junior Zavien Wolfe amassed 30 with victories in the long and triple and runner up finishes in the Decathlon and 4x400m relay. Had the weather cooperated it may have been more as he scratched the high jump as events started overlapping from delays in the morning session.

Zavien Wolfe scored 6222 points in the Decathlon the week prior to state where he placed 1st in every jump and even cleared 10 feet in the pole vault.

The next best point output behind Wolfe and Ware was senior Dohnavon Hunt. Hunt would place runner up in the 300m hurdles for the second year in a row, won the 4x200m relay, and grab third in the 100m dash and long jump for a point total of 22.5.

Seniors Dohnavon Hunt (lane 2) and Tyler Bell (lane 1) ran in the first heat of the 100m dash. Hunt would win the heat and finish only behind teammate Ware and John Sherman of Lavergne with Bell narrowly missing out on placing in the event finishing 9th overall. Bell had just come off the medal stand to line up for this event as he finished 3rd in the 110m Hurdles minutes prior.

At the end of the day, Memphis Central had claimed their 13th state title in school history and their first since 2017.

Ware and Wolfe will be returning next season with other key runners like Morcellous Harris coming back as well to support their defense efforts but will lose Hunt, Bell, and Quincy Briggs. The runner up team, Daniel Boone, will graduate all of their individual points scored. Twelve of the nineteen event championships were won between the Warriors and the Trailblazers. Thursday was indeed an impressive day of dominance by both of these programs in their specialties but the Warriors, like Brentwood, were stretch their athletes across more events and accumulated an All-Time point total in the process. Congratulations to Coach Haynes and the Warriors.
