Notable Performances And Races From The KYA Indoor Classic

KYA HS Indoor Classic

It goes without saying, the main headline from Saturday was Brentwood's Hudson Allain's US #1 400m dash. His 47.17 also set a new Tennessee All-Time Indoor Record for the event lowering the mark set by Emmanuel Bynum in 2019 by .59 seconds. Bynum also holds the state outdoor record at 46.60 which he also set in 2019 which is now very much in reach for Allain. Though there were no other records set on Saturday, there was more to be seen from Tennesseans throughout the 13 hours of competition and here are a few from each area of competition around the Vanderbilt Indoor Facility.

Girls 1 Mile Run

Houston's Zoe Marsh is an interesting case study for a distance runner that thrives on the track. The highest she's ever ranked for 5k in cross country is 20th, the highest she's ever placed at state is 11th, and yet she is the defending Division I Class AAA 3200m State Champion and has not one, but TWO runner up finishes in the 1600m behind only Claire Stegall. The future Razorback won the 1 mile on Saturday outkicking a deep field over the final 300 meters to finish in 5:08. Earlier, she would finish 3rd in the 800m running 2:18. Both were indoor PRs.

Horizontal Jumps

The triple jump is a new event for Trial By Fire's Camaria Corder but she's already finding success in it. The junior won the event on Saturday with a  best of 37-5.25. She also placed 4th in the long jump with a leap of 17-8.25. This is the farthest mark by a Tennessean this year. Last year, she finished 8th at state for the long as a member of Gallatin High School but now attends Mt. Juliet.

On the boys side, Nolensville's Sterling Weldon swept both events coming up just shy of 23 feet in the long and well over 48 feet in the triple. His 48-6 is a lifetime best indoors and out and currently ranked 4th in the nation. The Western Kentucky commit was overshadowed last spring by Zavien Wolfe but is coming into this season as favorite in both disciplines. Behind Weldon in the triple was Claiborne's Tyrell Miles who exceeded his personal best in the event by almost two full feet. Mile placed runner up in Division I Class AA ending his outdoor season with a 44-6.5. On Saturday he went 46-3.5.
