Recapping The All-Time Records Set During The 2023 Season

Open Running Events

Girls 800m & 1600m

Nolensville's Claire Stegall has danced around the 1600m record since April of last year when she came just .01 seconds short of matching the record time of 4:45.44 set by Margaret Groos in 1977 during a meet at Great Eight. It wasn't until April of this year where she finally set it with a 4:42.52 at Willco Championships. She lowered it again on Thursday (above) to 4:41.40. That time will stand as the All-Time and State Meet records. She also broke the 800m record time of 2:09.44 that had stood since 1978. Her 2:09.11, also run at Willcos, now stands as the All-Time mark. She currently has her name next to all three distance event with a 10:21.21 run at last year's Section 2 Championship. Considering she's only a sophomore, these will need continued updating.

Boys 110m Hurdles

There is no doubt Rockvale's Jakobe Tharp is the greatest high hurdler of all time in Tennessee history but unfortunately the number next to that will sit next to the All-Time Record won't be the one he laid down in his race (above) on Thursday. His 13.32 had the whole stadium abuzz but the wind reading was +3.0m/s meaning the Wind-Legal 13.72 he ran at Great Eight this year will stand as the All-Time Record. It was previously held by Brevin Sims at 13.80 set in 2019.  Tharp will have one more opportunity to race at Brooks PR. After that, he'll continue his career at Auburn University.

Boys 100m Dash

This record actually has a pretty messy history when we audited the state meet results a few years ago but all the qualifiers we laid out were put to rest earlier this season at Texas Relays when Jordan Ware of Memphis Central first broke the record of 10.33 held by Goodlettsville's Larry Cantrell. His Wind-Legal 10.28 likely would've lasted for as long as Cantrell's did but after Thursday, my immediate reaction is 10.13 will never be broken.

Boys 200m Dash

Ware wasn't done breaking records however and when he took to the track one last time he had his eyes set on the 200m mark. The time of 20.84 by Marquis Davis of Hamilton had stood since 1999. In his career, Ware had only run under twenty one time before Thursday and it was last April at 20.94. For his curtain call, Jordan ran 20.63. Ware will continue his running career at Mississippi State University.
