Great Eight Invitational
On Sunday, I emailed Mike Ham, the meet director, to inquire if he had any intention of rescheduling the meet. The forecast four days out had rain with potential thunderstorms in the forecast. However, with a timer from out of state and a host of meet officials to oversee the field events, there were just too many moving parts that that was an option and he gave me the assurance the meet would go on. Like Eastern Relays, the Great Eight Invitational is a PR style meet that allows teams from Middle Tennessee specifically to race high level competition in targeted events prior to qualifying season ramping up. Fortunately, in spite of the light rain that fell Thursday evening, the meet produced a total of seven Tennessee #1 marks which are as follows:
- Boys 200m Dash - John Sherman, 21.20
- Boys 400m Dash - Hudson Allain, 47.84
- Boys Shot Put - Drake Carlson, 59-11.75
- Girls 200m Dash - Sophie Yount, 24.51
- Girls 300m Hurdles - Abby Miller, 44.28
- Girls Triple Jump - Ryan Moore - 38-00.75
- Girls High Jump - Ally Beneke - 5-7
And those are just overall #1 marks. Jakobe Tharp officially set a new State Record in the 110m Hurdles. Even though he's run a faster time this season, he was finally at a meet that had a legal wind reading available to ratify the time. Claire Stegall and Abby Faith Cheeseman raced each other head to head for the first time ever, cross country or track, in the 1600 meter. Beyond that, numerous division leading marks were run on Thursday. Both 800m leads for Division I Class AA were posted with Lily Storey going 2:20 and Aiden Haack going 1:55. Literally every race is worth rewatching for one reason or another from Thursday. Can't wait to see what else the weekend has in store.
