End Of Season Rewind: Which Preseason Storylines Came True?

Team Storylines

Who will win D-II AA Girls?

There was a lot of chatter about who was going to win this classification from our responses and the statistic I kept pointing to after 2021 was that 34 of the top 35 runners were returning in 2022. If everyone ran according their rankings, we should not see much fluctuation in the results and ultimately there wasn't. Here's a side by side of the team standings from last year compared to this year.

State 2021State 2022
Harpeth Hall - 69Harpeth Hall - 51
Webb School of Knoxville - 73Webb School of Knoxville - 98
GPS - 80Baylor - 112
Baylor - 89GPS - 165
Father Ryan - 161Knox Catholic - 168

For those who predicted "HH wins state again duh" and "Harpeth Hall back 2 back," congratulations on being correct. While there isn't as much continuity heading in to next season, 35 of the top 40 are returning in 2023 which is a lot by comparison to other classifications.

Will D-II Have The State's Best Boys Team?

The last time this was even in question was in 2018 and most coaching insiders I talk to agree that Siegel vs. Brentwood Academy that season would've been a great race but none could definitively say one was better than the other since they never raced head to head. I felt the same way about McCallie and Farragut this season and when the rubber hit the road, Farragut came out on top slightly by 10 points at the Southeast Regional. McCallie will, as they did this season, return as the preseason #1 next year. The question will be posed again heading into 2023 They have a lot going for them in spite of losing Hugh Carlson and Nate Armstrong to graduation. They'll be able to backfill with Garrison Corley (15:47) who was ineligible to run varsity this season due to transfer rules and have the best projected JV squad in the state as well who, in our projections, could score a perfect 15 against the rest of the state's next best seven.

At FrontRunners, McCallie claimed twelve of the top fourteen places in the JV division.
