Individual Storylines
Ramer and Clemons
There were two storylines in conflict with one another and those were whether Ravenwood's Miles Ramer would win back to back state titles and if Cleveland's Owen Clemons could become only the second freshman ever to win Division I Class AAA. Unfortunately, Ramer's season ended abruptly right after running the #1 time in the state of 14:49, which no Tennessean bettered, at The Southern Showcase due to injury and did not have the opportunity to defend his state championship. Clemon's ultimately did win the State Championship as a freshman. Assuming the good health of both runners in 2023, this sets up a very unique situation where two individual cross county state champions will race each other next season; a future storyline in itself.
Clemons ran 15:22 to win the TSSAA Division I Class AAA State Championship. His margin of victory was 11 seconds.
Who Will Emerge In Division II Class A?
The rankings at the beginning of the season pointed to Drew Johnson of Donelson Christian entering as the favorite and Austin Cason of USN as the likely challenger for the title and outside of Sammy Mohamed getting into the mix, it ultimately played out that way. Here's a comparison of the preseason rankings next to the state results of the top five.
Preseason | State 2022 |
Drew Johnson - 16:11 | Drew Johnson - 16:19 |
Austin Cason - 16:27 | Sammy Mohamed - 16:30 |
Reilly Mehegan - 17:15 | Austin Cason - 16:41 |
Joshua Cross - 17:23 | Joshua Cross - 16:53 |
Sammy Mohamed - 17:27 | Connor Carter - 17:01 |
It's rare to see the rankings run so true year over year but in this case they did.
