Week 7 Highlights: Great Eight, Section 2, SCIAA

SCIAA County Championship

Can Memphis Central Win State?

Below are the winning team point totals from the last six boys team state champions in Division I - Large (AAA):

Year Winning Point Total
2019 77
2018 62
2017 67.5
2016 74
2015 61
2014 68

So let's assume on paper Memphis Central has their best day ever. Jordan Ware wins both short sprints, Dohnovon Hunt places top 3 in both hurdles and Long Jump, their 4x200 wins and another relay scores. I see about 50 points on their best day. Now do that exercise with any other team in the state and see if you can find more than 50 points? The closest thing I can find is HVA who may not win a single event but could theoretically score anywhere from 30-45 points. It's hard to tell because while Memphis Central backloaded their schedule with state leading performances HVA frontloaded theirs and we haven't seen results from them in two weeks now. I have no feel for this Division right now but may have a better idea based on qualifiers after Sectionals. Either way, it's going to be an exciting competition.

White Station Shines

When I went to cover the Houston Track Classic earlier this month I thought I saw the best of what Memphis had to offer. I was wrong. White Station, the largest enrollment school in the state without a track on campus, did not compete that day but this weekend stood tall among Memphis' best.

Shamari Covington  posted a TN #1 in the 110m Hurdles with a time of 14.29 and teammate Ramya King posted a TN #2 time in the girls version of the discipline just .08 off the state lead. King also claimed victory in the Long Jump with a Section 4 leading leap of 17' 7".

Sophomore Courtland Noble decided this weekend to skip straight over runner 50-points in the quarter mile and go right to running sub-50. His season progression has gone like this so far:

Date Time
4/2 52.33
4/9 51.31
4/16 51.07
4/29 49.87
5/1 49.45

Yeah that's a completely normal progression for the 400m. Just drop 1.5 seconds in two weeks. The sophomore now holds the #3 time in the state heading into Sectionals.
