Week 7 Highlights: Great Eight, Section 2, SCIAA

Section II Sub-Sectionals

Here's another thing I learned this week as well as it pertains to qualifying formats. While I've known for some time that some sections have two sub-sectionals others have none. What I found out this week is that Section 2 has four sub-sectionals?

We've brought on a contributor to cover the Chattanooga area and when he said he was going to a sub-sectional that Cleveland was going to I said "Our priority athletes are Javon Burke, Skyy Craig, Ryan Lovelace, Landri Wilcox, Roman Woodson, and the Cleveland Girl's Sprinters." I was under the impression Murfreesboro was a North SubSection and the Chattanooga Area was a south Subsection. Wrong. He texted back and said "Walker Valley, Columbia Central, and Cookeville aren't here." So after some more back and forth it turns out there are 4 districts and each district advances 4 to sectionals.

That said, here are some highlights from that meet.

Did he say "10.71?"

Javon Burke ran to advance on Thursday and when I saw this interview I had to do some fact checking. After looking at the other site where the Chattanooga Area likes to post results to I found a meet form April 6th where in fact, yes, Burke ran a 10.71 100m dash and an 21.65 200m dash. They've since been added to our site.

Javon Burke is the 100m/200m favorite in Section 2.

It's hard to tell a favorite in short sprints right now in Large Division I but I'm excited to see quality sprinters from each area of the state meet in the middle later this month. Langlois, Steward, Ware, Burke, Foley, and Wharton... Should be a fun race.

Cleveland Girls

I don't think Kategie Casseus, Janay, and Janisa Ryan have what it takes to win an open event but together on a relay it's a very real possibility. The girls are the current favorite in the 4x100m Relay and fringe top 8 in the others. In each of their interviews they echoed how focused they were on those. I'll be curious to see how they can balance Janay's 400 open aspirations while utilizing her on the 4x100 an event before.

Janay Ryan won the 200m and 400m Dash at the Section 2 District 1 Championship.
