Teams and Runners to Watch from the Midstate on Saturday

Runners to Watch: Boys

Silas Winders: Henry County High School

Davis Bove: Centennial High School

David Ahlmeyer: Beech Senior High School

It's unfortunate this is going to be the last race of the day on a likely muddy course because the Large School - Division I boys is going to be insane. Even though it looks like a race for second, we have 5 runners who could all win and 3 from the Midstate who are very familiar with each other by this point in the season. Silas bookended the regular season beating both Davis and David at the MSCCA meets. In between Davis won Memphis Twilight (beating Silas) and Jesse Owens all while competing for Team USA at the ITU World Triathlon Final in Australia in Mid-September. Meanwhile David, Furman commit, has a second place finish at Trinity Valkyrie (to Jake Renfree) and a victory over Silas as well at the Region 5 Championship. Transitive property comparisons can really be thrown out the window at this point. Cole Bullock on paper is the favorite in the division but if we see a collapse like we did in this past spring's mile... it's anyone's race.

Winders or Ahlmeyer can win if they can distance themselves from the runners with stronger kicks before the final stretch. They are higher mileage type runners who can lock into a pace and drop the chase pack a lot of times by the 3rd mile.

Bove can win if he can hang onto the pace and outkick the other runners over the final 800. Technically, he isn't a "high mileage" runner in training. He was only running 25 miles a week earlier this year as he was preparing for his triathlon but his cross training between biking and swimming has made up for his lack of traditional running miles and has enabled him to race at the high level he has this season while not having that impact on his body.

Other Favorites:

Alex Ponce: Merrol Hyde Magnet - Small School Division I
Heavy favorite in his division. Has raced top competition all season. If he can execute his race strategy he will win on Saturday
Matthew McMillan: Brentwood Academy - Large School Division II
Another heavy favorite based on rankings and rumor is he is actually healthy now. Like Coco, looking to leave Saturday with two wins... Team and Individual.
Nick Sieders: University School of Nashville - Small School Division II
Top 3 finish is likely but also very important to lock down for Nick as USN will be in a tight battle in the team competition.
