The Virginia Tech track and field teams ended the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in fine style Saturday afternoon at Ketner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University. The women\'s team finished fifth with 73.50 points, up from ninth last year at the outdoor championships, while the men took home a seventh-place finish with 58 points.
Virginia Tech senior Saskia Triesscheijn shattered nearly every record possible en route to claiming her first Atlantic Coast Conference title Saturday afternoon. Triesscheijn established a personal best, school record, ACC record and the top point total in the NCAA this season with 5,833 points in the heptathlon.
Virginia Tech senior Spyridon Jullien was named the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) Southeast Region indoor athlete of the year Monday, as voted on by the coaches.

Leading the way for the Hokies is senior Spyridon Jullien. He is the defending national champion in the weight throw and has the top mark in the country this season. He had an effort of 23.63m (77\'6.50\"), which is the fifth-best mark all-time in NCAA competition.
The Virginia Tech invitational will be held at Rector Field House January 27-28, 2006. There have been some changes in format. The meet will be a fully sanctioned NFHS event for the District of Columbia and the states of Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, and Kentucky. No club or unattached athletes may be entered. In order to comply with directives from the Montgomery County Fire Marshall, the number of entries will be limited. There will be about ninety schools accepted plus some selected individuals athletes from sanctioned schools to insure the competitive integrity of the meet. Each athlete will be limited to three total events (including relays). Each school may enter one athlete and relay team per event. Entries will total around 1800 athletes. he Virginia Tech track and field program has announced the signing of Queen Harrison to a National Letter of Intent for the 2006-07 year. Harrison, a senior at Hermitage High School in Richmond, Va., earned All-American honors in the triple jump and in the 4x200 meter-relay in 2005. She was the runner-up at the Nike Indoor National Meet in the triple jump and helped her high school to a second-place finish in the 4x200m relay.
The Virginia Tech track and field program has announced the signing of Devin Cornwall to a National Letter of Intent for the 2006-07 year. Cornwall, a native of Culpeper, Va., is a senior at Culpeper County High School and will compete in cross country and track and field at Tech. Earlier this year, he won the Northwest Region cross country championship for cross country as well as the Cedar Run District Championships.
The Virginia Tech track and field program has announced the signing of Asia Washington to a National Letter of Intent for the 2006-07 year. Washington, a Piscataway, N.J., native, is one of the top 400- and 800-meter runners in the nation. She was the runner-up at the New Jersey group IV State Championships in the 800m with a personal-best time of 2:12.01. She also took third in the 400m at the meet. Washington\'s top time of 55.56 in the 400m came at the New Jersey Meet of Champions. Her Piscataway High School 4x400m relay time was among the top 15 in the nation with a time of 3:48.
In the second meet of the season, the Virginia Tech men\'s and women\'s teams both garnered first-place honors Friday evening at the VT Alumni Meet. The 4.7k race on the women\'s side featured freshman Tasmin Fanning, who edged her sister, sophomore All-ACC performer from 2004, Jessica, to capture the women\'s crown. Running in the first meet of her collegiate career, Tasmin Fanning posted a time of 17:12.91. On the men\'s side, senior David Atkiss won the 7.7k race with a time of 24:34.66 in his last home meet of his Tech career.
Kristin Hart (Herndon, Va.) was the top collegiate finisher on the women\'s side in her first cross country race at Virginia Tech, helping the Hokies win their season-opening meet Saturday morning. The Virginia Tech men finished second, narrowly missing out on a first-place finish.
The Virginia Tech men\'s track & field team finished in a program best 13th place with 21 points out of 71 competing teams after 21 events scored at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships, which were hosted by Sacramento State and held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex Wednesday through Saturday. The men\'s 13th place finish (21 points) is the best team finish for the Hokie track & field program at a national meet. Virginia Tech was projected to tie for 23rd place according to the last Men\'s Trackwire 25 national outdoor poll released on June 3. As you can see, the Hokies surpassed the projection and made history for the program.
Track & field athletes Brian Mondschein and Sven Hahn scored points for Virginia Tech in their event\'s finals late Friday evening at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex on the campus of Sacramento State. Mondschein (Jr., Hummelstown, Pa.) claimed the runner-up spot in the pole vault finals by tying his personal best height of 17\'8\'50\" (5.40m). For his personal best second place finish at a NCAA championship, Mondschein earned his second All-American honor of his career and eight points for Tech\'s men\'s team.

Spyridon Jullien (Jr., Athens, Greece) won Virginia Tech and his own first NCAA east region individual title today with a throw of 219\'11\" (67.04m) in the hammer event. With his win, Jullien automatically qualified to compete in his third NCAA outdoor national meet and earned 10 points for Tech\'s men\'s team. Brian Mondschein (Jr., Hummelstown, Pa.) jumped 17\'1\" (5.21m) in the pole vault event to win his first NCAA east region individual title today. Mondschein\'s first-place finish automatically qualified him to compete in his second NCAA outdoor championships.

The United States Track Coaches Association named Virginia Tech\'s Spyridon Jullien as the Mondo Outdoor Southeast District Athlete of the Year for NCAA Division I. This outdoor season, Jullien (Jr., Athens, Greece) set the school and ACC overall hammer throw record with the current No. 1 mark in the nation (238\'5\'; 72.68m) at the Clemson Invitational. He has held the top spot on the NCAA Division I performance list all outdoor season. Jullien won the ACC men\'s hammer throw title with a new ACC meet and Florida State\'s Mike Long Track record of 233\'7\" (71.27m).
Virginia Tech competed well all weekend long against the best track & field teams in the nation at the Penn Relays, which was held at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.

Jullien, a two-time All-American and two-time BIG EAST champion specifically in the hammer throw, still remains the No. 1 hammer throw athlete in the NCAA to date. Smit (Jr., Pretoria, South Africa), currently the No. 2 men\'s javelin thrower in the nation, became the ACC champion in the event with a mark of 236\'5\" (72.06m), which was 23 feet farther than the second place finisher. Smit, a 2004 all-region selection and a two-time NCAA qualifier in the event, won his first conference championship.
Sven Hahn, a thrower on the Virginia Tech men\'s track & field team, won the shot put event this afternoon at Tennessee\'s Sea Ray Relays held at Tom Black Track. Other Hokie notable performances include the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays recording school season best times and Brian Mondschein moving up into the top-15 in the NCAA in the pole vault.
