BOARD OF CONTROL MINUTES

  1. Roll Call

 

  1. Approved Minutes of Last Meeting

 

  1. Voted to authorize the Executive Director to select sites and make plans for conducting regional and state tournaments or meets in golf, tennis, cross country, track and field, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, soccer, and bowling. 

 

  1. Approved the Financial Report of Baseball

  1. Reviewed the list of Athletic District/Regional Coordinators and the Coordinators Meeting.

 

  1. Voted to continue to award $27,000 in scholarships to students at schools that are selected for the A.F. Bridges Sportsmanship Award. 

 

  1. Voted to continue to pay the $30 membership into the National Federation Coaches’ Association for the state Coach of the Year winners for the NFHS Coaches Award Program.

 

There are awards given for coaches of the year (male and female) from each state, section, and at the national level, as well as a contributor of the year.

 

  1. Heard Report on Officials’ Basketball Camps

 

  1. Approved Financial Aid for the 2012-2013 School Year.  All member independent schools (Division I and Division II) were required to submit their financial aid information, as it pertains to varsity student-athletes, to the state office prior to July 23, 2012. 

 

  1. Heard Update on Regional Basketball Sites for the 2012-2013 School Year

 

  1. Discussed the Administrators’ Meetings Schedule for 2012-2013

 

  1. Reviewed Update and Timeline for Classification

 

  1. Heard Update on the BlueCross BlueShield Championship.  This was the first year of this award sponsored by BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee which is awarded to schools in each class based on athletic achievement throughout the year.  In order to qualify, schools could not have any unsportsmanlike incidents throughout the season, which includes player and coach ejections.  The winner of each class will receive a check for $2500.

 

  1. Voted to accept proposed four year contract extension from the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce to host the BlueCross Bowl games.  The current contract expires at the conclusion of the 2012-13 school year.  This will extend the contract through 2016.

 

  1. Voted to accept proposed four year contract extension from the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce to host the BlueCross Spring Fling.  The current contract for both events goes through 2013.  This will extend both events through the 2016-17 school year.

 

  1. This is the last year of the current contract with Chattanooga to host the Girls’ State Soccer Tournament. The Board voted to instruct the state office to discuss with the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce the possibility to host the Girls’ State Soccer Tournament in Murfreesboro after the contract expires in Chattanooga.    

 

  1. Voted to accept proposed four year contract extension from the Rutherford County Chamber of Commerce to host the BlueCross Basketball Championships.  The current contract for both events goes through 2013.  This will extend both events through the 2016-17 school year.

 

  1. Approved Cannon County High School and District 8-AA’s request for an exception to the district basketball format to be allowed to play three basketball games per night during the district tournament.  They have been playing at White County High School.  This year the tournament has to be moved because White County is hosting their district.  District 8-AA plans to play at Tennessee Tech University.  The format adjustment would allow them to work around the University’s scheduled contests.

  1. Viewed TSSAA Network Video that will be displayed at the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in conjunction with the TSSAA Hall of Fame exhibit.

 

32.  Voted to instruct state office to send a letter to administrators of schools in violation of the NFHS uniform requirements in football, requesting they respond in regards to how they plan on being compliant.

 

If they haven’t corrected the issue by the third week of the season, then they will be assessed a $250 fine.  If it is still not corrected by the following season, then the school will be assessed a $500 fine. 

 

33.  Heard update regarding Freedom Christian Academy withdrawing from TSSAA.  Membership was to begin with the 2012-13 school year but because of not having enough students interested in going to high school at Freedom, the decision was made to withdraw their membership.
