The Cordova Wolfpack Invitational seemed more like a summer event than an early spring meet. The temperatures on Saturday peaked over 80 degrees and the sun gave a lot of people a spring break kind of tan (burn!). This invitational usually brings a solid group of Division I and Division II schools. The competition also brought out the heat in the Cordova girls team that was lead by Jessica Townsend's elite first place finishes in the Long Jump, Triple Jump, and 100M dash and also in the 4x400 relay team. Adding to those wins, were wins in the 1600, both the Sprint & Distance medley's Friday evening, the 100 Hurdles, and the Discus put the Cordova girls team in an envious position – 1st place overall. Other impressive performances included Liza Wellford from Hutchison who continued to dominate the 300 hurdles with another impressive finish. Bolton sprinter, Keisha Watkins ran a speedy 58.95 in the 400M. Even without their distance top guns, Hine and Jorgenson, White Station girls managed to hang onto a second place finish with Hutchison and Bolton on their tails.
The boys division was taken, in a tighter race, by Cordova again. Impressive finishes by senior Brandon Gray, clocking a record breaking 48.29 in the 400, and a one-two finish for pole vaulters Nick Baker and Robbey Rasmussen (14' and 13'6" respectively) helped lead the way for the Cordova boys to keep the trophy at their school again this year. Hamilton High School was a close second, and mostly from their impressive 1st place finishes in the relays. Their team virtually swept all the relays placing first in the Sprint Medley, Distance Medley, 4 x 800, 4 x 400, 4 x 200, and 4 x 100. On a day where the relays experienced several difficulties (several exchange zone DQ's), Hamilton showed their depth and experience is going to be a force at the end of the season.
Even though Coach Jason Wood (Cordova Head Track Coach) was busy directing the meet, he did have time to praise the efforts of his squads and said he was even impressed with some of the performances of the day. Coach Wood also expressed thanks and praise for all the athletes and coaches for their performances and help throughout the meet.
