Live Like Eli
Eli Cramer, a 2020 graduate of Riverdale High School and a sophomore track and field athlete at Milligan University, died on March 31st, 2022 after being struck by a car while running in Williamsburg, Virginia, ahead of an early season college invitational. As a result, the Live Like Eli non-profit organization was established to honor his legacy. The organization raises money for the The Eli Cramer Memorial Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships to young men and/or women that are cross country and/or track runners who emulate Eli's relentless work ethic, unquestionable character, and boundless zeal in supporting other runners (both teammates and competitors). The Eli Cramer Memorial Time Trial last night served as a both a fundraiser and an opportunity for runners to measure their summer training progress as we approach the 2023 cross country season. Hailey, Vinson Collect Wins
Even though we may have had heat advisories all week, a line of thunderstorms passed through the Middle Tennessee area right before the meet was scheduled to begin and as a result, took some of that oppressive humidity with it. The middle school 1600m division started the festivities off with overall victories by Christiana Middle's Sadie Pendleton who finished in 6:22 and Stewart Creek's David Scobey who ran 5:27 and that trend of Rutherford Count athlete continued with the high school events.
Eli's teammate and recent Riverdale graduate Daniel Martin took pacing duties and in the Girls 3200m and Rockvale's Leila Hailey and Brentwood's Peyton Strauss followed closely behind for the first 2000 meters and after the rabbit dropped, Hailey separated herself over the final 600 en route to an 11:43. The distance had become her forte this spring where she took 5th overall in Division I Class AAA. It's apparent she still has momentum from her outdoor campaign.
Strauss, who was out of town for Brentwood's intersquad 3200m earlier this week, was the only other runner under twelve minutes finishing in 11:57.
On the boy's side, Rockvale's Tate Vinson and Coffee County's Fletcher Barnard tailed Martin for the first four laps with Vinson separating himself from Barnard over the final four. Vinson would finish in 9:58 and felt good about the performance after.
Barnard would finish in 10:25 being the only other under 11:00. With another line of storms approaching we weren't able to film this race due to safety concerns.
