Youth, HS Events Alongside Pros At Ed Murphey Classic

2023 Ed Murphey Classic

Some of the World's best track and field athletes return to Memphis August 4th and 5th for the 2023 Ed Murphey Classic! The Murphey Classic started in 2017 and has evolved into a World-class track and field meet that includes youth and high school events.

The goal of the Murphey Classic is to expose the sport of Track and Field to as many kids (and adults) as possible to ensure its continued growth and to show local and regional kids what is possible through track and field! The event serves as a great lead up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics right here in the United States!

In 2022, the event hosted 35+ Olympians along with many local and regional kids and the meet was ranked 4th in the USA (behind the Prefontaine Classic) and 27th in the World by World Athletics competition performance rankings. Fans saw professional sprinter TeeTee Terry break the 100m TN-Soil record in 10.82 and many more world-class performances right here in Memphis! A highlight video of the 2022 event can be found below.

The 2023 event will take place on Friday August 4th at Rhodes College and Saturday August 5th on Beale Street (road mile and street pole vault only). The professional events will be broadcasted live on NBC/Peacock and kids will be able to meet some of the World's top athletes.

We wanted to share some information regarding the 2023 Ed Murphey Classic as you either prepare for summer racing or for your cross country seasons. This year the organizers really want to increase the youth component of the event and we wanted to reach out early to put the event on your radars!

Saturday August 5th - Beale Street/Handy Park

On Saturday August 5th, the event moves to World-famous Beale Street for the first ever Beale Street Murphey Mile presented by the First Horizon Foundation! We'll have various waves/heats of the road mile culminating with a pro women's and pro men's race. Following the road mile, professional pole vaulters will take flight in the 2nd annual Beale Street Pole Vault. All info including registration and time schedule for the mile, can be found here.

All proceeds from registration fees, ticket sales, merchandise, and concessions go back to support our youth programming including purchasing tents for local teams in need, free track and field clinics (see highlight of the Pole Vault clinic HERE), and the newly formed, no-cost, Murphey Track Club.
