Memphis Central, Brentwood: Why They Won D-I Class AAA

Brentwood Boys

First Since 2019

As part of our preview for the upcoming 2023 season, we interviewed Brentwood's Hudson Allain as our feature athlete to watch for the Sprints. During that interview we alluded to the fact that on paper, it appeared that the Bruins had all the pieces in place to mount a challenge to defending champion Memphis Central. The Warriors in 2022 set a classification record for most points scored during a state championship with 112 but, though they would return State Record Holders Jordan Ware, Zavien Wolfe, and Morcellous Harris they would also graduate several key contributors from that squad while Brentwood would retain most of theirs. Here's how it played out on May 25th.

The last time Brentwood won a boys state title was in 2019 and did so by scoring exactly 0 points on the track. Literally all of the Bruins 77 points came from Multis and Field Events with Jett Kinder scoring 37, Skylar Coffey scoring 20, and a handful of other Bruins collecting 20 more in other jumps. This year's scoring breakdown was a little more complete with a majority of their points coming in the sprint events on the track.

Aiden Carter and Canon Kinder gave the Bruins the early lead finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the Decathlon the week prior. Carter followed that up collecting 14 more scoring in three events on Thursday with Kinder grabbing eight in the Pole Vault. Hudson Allain was able to take to the track four times winning the 400m, placing 6th in the 200m, and anchoring both the 4x200m and 4x400m relays to scoring finishes. His 400m was the only event win for the Bruins on Thursday with teammate Jackson White placing 5th. Entering the 3200m, the teams were separated by just 6 points with Central ahead 73-67. Then Brentwood's Robert Pautienus and Kehler Vaughn took to the track in the 3200m seeded 3rd and 4th and came away with a 3rd and 5th place finish giving Brentwood the lead heading into the final event.

You can see in the video, Coach Fedoris and Coach Pautienus on the backstretch in black willing their runners to these critical points every lap. Brentwood would go on to finish 3rd in the subsequent event while Central would finish 6th giving the Bruins their 8th state title in program history.

Though the Warriors did not get the team title, in the process of placing runner up they did set three All-Time State and State Meet records at the competition. Jordan Ware's 10.13 in the 100m, 20.63 in the 200m, and the 4x100m relay team featuring himself, Yasir Muhammad, Morcellous Harris, and Jeremiah Patton lowered the mark to 40.86 becoming the first team under 41 in Tennessee history. Zavien Wolfe would win the Long Jump as well.

And with that we conclude our coverage of the 2023 High School track and field season. Congratulations to Coach Fedoris and the Bruin boys on their victory. Good luck to everyone in their summer track endeavors.
