Harpeth Hall, Christian Brothers: Why They Won D-II Class AA

Christian Brothers

Fourth In School History

Since taking over as editor, the team competition in Division II Class AA has been gripped by two programs: Christian Brothers and McCallie. In 2021 McCallie won with CBHS placing runner up and for the past two years the Brothers have taken the title with McCallie in the second position both times. Last year, the pathway to the championship was paved by Christian Brother's ability to rack up points with max qualifiers in four events and while they still had athletes stretched across the board this year, the abundance of first place finishes compared to 2022 really elevated them in the point totals by the end of the competition.

Sophomore Ashton Hearn started the run of gold medals for the brothers winning the Discus competition with a throw of 185-4 the throw was a seven foot PR and still sits as the US #4 mark for the Class of 2025. Then, just as they did last year, opened the running events with a victory in the 4x800m relay but unlike last year, that wasn't their only win on the track. Jaxon Hammond would, just a couple of events later, run a wind legal 10.35 setting a state meet record, Kaleb Smith would win the 800m, as he did in indoor, midway through the order, and Hammond would put the finishing touches on the point total for the purple and white with another win in the 200m dash.

When you drill down further I think one thing sticks out to me. While the East Region was busy cannibalizing itself in the 1600m and the 3200m distances this season, Christian Brothers went all in on the 800 meter and outscored McCallie 29 to 28 in distance events and relays with only two points total scored in the 1600m and the 3200m. 27 points came from the 4x800m and 800m open.

McCallie to their credit had a strong showing winning the 4x200m relay and finishing no worse than 3rd in any of the others. The team is relatively young with only three seniors contributing individual points. With Christian Brothers also losing very few, this match up is sure to repeat itself for a fourth year in a row as we look ahead to next season. In the meantime, congratulations to Coach Dwyer and the Christian Brothers track and field program.
