The Webb School Girls
In 2021, Abby Faith Cheeseman was the lone representative for The Webb School of Bell Buckle at the TSSAA Track and Field State Championships. This marked the first time an athlete from the school qualified for the meet. As an Eighth-Grader, she placed first in the 3200m and runner up in the 1600m. The following year, Webb expanded their footprint at the meet qualifying eight athletes and relays accumulating 51 points as a team and a 4th place overall finish. This year, the Feet continued their upward trajectory qualifying a total of 13 athletes and relays and won the Division II Class A State title over defending team champion University School of Nashville 83 to 78. Maximizing Points
While having Abby Faith Cheeseman is clearly an advantage for any team, the way in which she was utilized on Wednesday became the pathway to the championship. In my history of covering the sophomore, at no point have I seen her race more than two events on the track in any one competition. Even during cross country, it's always 50/50 on whether or not she will race at a meet where Webb is entered. The pitch count was lifted on Wednesday though as she took to the track four times in a matter of 3.5 hours sweeping the distance events and running a leg on the 4x400m relay just moment after receiving her medal for the 3200m run. Webb led heading into the event by three points and likely needed the additional speed to solidify the championship. The commentators open noting this play out.
Without that leg on the relay, the outcome likely changes. Without a third open event, it definitely does. Pair her performance with a supporting cast on the track that included Bree Robinson (400m Champion, 7th in the 200m), Henley Pritchard (3rd in the 1600m, 6th in the 800m) and in the field that included Mylee Cox (4th in the Triple Jump), Angelica Velez and Tatianna Stovall (4th and 6th in the Shot Put) and the Feet found just enough points to end up on top in the end. As we pivot to the runner up USN, who also won their first ever girls title just last year, I think what is interesting to point out is the Tigers also scored 83 points last year in victory as well and their profile year over year is pretty similar. Holly Schreiber retained her title in the pole vault, Alima Kassim scored 20 this year compared to 18 last year, Auldyn Plant scored twice in the distance events as she did the year prior, and Olivia Jelsma increased her output in the multis while also contributing on the track. A mirror image just wasn't enough to fend off the up and coming program from Bell Buckle. Congratulation to Coach Cheeseman and the Webb Girls. Now onto the Boys.
