Recap: Key Takeaways From The 2023 MNPS Championships

Kymora-Lee Williams Is The Real Deal

Last year was Kymora-Lee Williams first year running track. I remember seeing her name pop up in results and thinking "that's a good time for a freshman" and she ultimately ended the scholastic season as just that: a pretty good freshman that almost made state. What a difference a year makes though. On Wednesday, in the span of three and a half hours elapsed meet time, swept the sprint events at her home track lowering all of her outdoor PRs in the process. Going into the event, she was already leading the state in the 200m dash and lowered that lead here.

Girls Overall 200m Dash Rankings

She currently ranks #1 overall in the event with a 24.70, #3 overall in the 100m dash with a 12.05, and #3 overall in the 400m dash with a 57.97. With this type of performance in this elapsed amount of time it put the possibility of sprint tripling heading into qualifying season which we discussed after the meet.

She'll have some taller tests ahead of her in the immediate future with Nashville City Championships next week where public and private come together in competition. She'll likely line up against Alima Kassim and/or Erica Douglas multiple times over the course of prelims and finals. Should be a great measuring stick meet for the young sprinter.

Hume-Fogg Boys Dominate Distance Events

The Hume-Fogg Boys placed first and second (and in one case third) in every individual open distance event 800m and over while also winning the boys 4x800m relay. Wesley Shannon, Reed McClain, and Nick Ostroski went 1-2-3 in the 800m all finishing in 2:08 and change, Ashton Allen and Ben Abelow went 1-2 in the 3200m, and most notably as it pertains to state rankings, McClain and Ryo Walker went 1-2 in the 1600m run.

McClain and Walker now sit #5 and #6 overall in the Division I Class AA state rankings. These are a lot of different names that are all returning next season and with this type of depth, a solid spring for the Knights can propel a team into the fall for cross country.
