USJ Home Meet #3
The elements on Thursday were brutal so is one of those meets where you somewhat have to look past the performances on paper and use your best judgement of what the major story lines were coming out of the competition
While it's been a crazy year in boy's high jump already this season with four jumpers at 6-8 or higher, the only jumper from last season to have that height on his resume heading into this season was the defending Class AA state champion Milan's Andy Westbrook who had yet to debut. He won the high jump competition on Thursday with a modest opener of 6-2. This mark puts him tied for second in his classification. Not quite as explosive in the rankings as his debut was last year but just viewing this as a rust-busting competition for him given the 45 degree temps.

As we noted in the preseason, the USJ girls are riding a lot of momentum heading into this season after winning the 4x800m and 4x400m relays in Division II Class A last spring. Three of the legs of the winning mile relay team took to the open 400m on Thursday and placed 1st, 3rd, and 5th. Haynes Haltom (far right) narrowly won with a new PR of 63.63 over South Gibson's Alana Seals. Julianna Schultz (far left) finished 3rd with Adan Jett (middle right) finishing 5th. Two races later, Schultz would win the 800m run. After one more home meet, USJ will travel to McCallie for the Mid-South Track Invitational which will be a good test for the Bruins against a lot of strong programs right before qualifying season.
