LaGrant Reaches New Heights, More Top Performances At Siegel

LaGrant High Jumps US #5

Rockvale's Lewis LaGrant high jumped a US #5 on Saturday at the Siegel Opens with this clearance of 6-11. It was the highest clearance in the event since 2015 when two jumpers in the state cleared seven feet even. LaGrant is the defending state champion for Division I Class AAA who won the championship last May with a personal best clearance of 6-6. That remained his highest until Saturday. The senior, who two weeks ago opened his season at 6-5, modestly entered the competition at 5-10 methodically raising the bar with clearances at 6-0, 6-2, 6-5, 6-7, 6-9, and finally 6-11. He then moved to 7-2 to attempt to tie the state record. While we expect gains year over year in the 2-4 inch window, a five inch PR when you're already at six and a half feet is a seismic escalation for a cold windy day in Mid-March. I will be curious to see how consistent he can be at these new heights and if there will be a recalibration of the height he chooses to enter competitions in moving forward.
