The last six times Bella Guillamondegui has run in a state championship race she has crossed the finish line in first in all but one of them. Her only loss coming on the final run of her Distance Triple Crown attempt as a sophomore where she was narrowly outleaned at the line in the 800m losing by just 0.03 seconds. Since then, she has dictated every race. Though quality runners have been in the races with her, no one has yet tried to take the pacesetting responsibilities from her. I've embedded this race before but it's worth watching again even though it is a track race.

When Bella slowed down, they all slowed down. When Bella started to kick, they all tried to match. While not as exaggerated, this is how every championship race Guillamondegui was a part of last year played out including last year's competition at Sanders Ferry. The youth in this classification may contribute to this race apprehension. As it stands now, Guillamondegui is the only senior in the Top 10 for this classification. As for the other runners in the top five, Anna Graves and Meriel Rowland are only juniors, Addi Greene is a sophomore, and Jazzlyn Garmer is a freshman. For one of them to come out on top next week, they will have to respond when Guillamondegui turns on the gas in the second loop. I'll be curious to see who will.

On the team side, some may be wondering why the projected points in this article (92) are not the projected points in our ranking system (25) for the Webb School of Knoxville. The reason that is the case is that while Carolina Areheart and Kristina Weaver have run for the Spartans this season, they are ineligible for the scholastic cross country season. That makes the defending state champion Harpeth Hall the favorite to repeat on paper. The margin of victory last season between the Honey Bears and the Spartans was just four points and while it appears to be close again, Harpeth Hall's depth looks too strong for the front end firepower of Webb to overcome. They'll likely be able to bring in seven before the Spartan's fifth.
