By the time the girls varsity race ended last year at the Voyles Classic the heat index was likely over 100 degrees. Many required medical attention after the race. Weather patterns like these are normal for early September and have a track record of lasting well into Mid-October. Last week however, when runners in Tennessee, Alabama, and Virginia took to the start line they were greeted with overcast skies, low temperatures, and perfect racing conditions. These times below are a direct reflection of those conditions. Prior to Saturday, no girl had ever run under eighteen minutes at The Hermitage. Three did on September 10th and Claire Stegall almost ran under 17:00. 

It's been over a year since the sophomore from Nolensville set foot on a cross country course and in spite of the span of time away from the five thousand meter distance it does not appear as if it disrupted her trajectory. She ran a full minute faster than her opener at this course a year ago.
