TSSAA State Championship Events to Watch: Division II A

Division II A Girls

Division II A Girls

Pole Vault

Just like in the boys division, this event features a young but talented athlete that sits in the top three in the state across all classifications. University School of Nashville's Holly Schreiber will likely have the luxury of sitting on the sidelines for the entire competition, watch as each girl clears out around eight feet or so, then come in at 9' 6" and on her first attempt win the state title. Not sure what she'll ask the bar to be raised to after that, but I imagine twelve even to 12-6 is on the horizon for the sophomore on Wednesday.

St. George's Independent's Allison Newman is healthy again and after missing the state cross country championships in November, the senior is looking to cement her legacy in the division before she heads off to Mizzou in the fall. In her way to ending her career as a state champion though is who she will ultimately pass the torch to after she graduates. The Webb School's (Bell Buckle) Abby Faith Cheeseman is only an 8th grade but currently sits TN #2 behind only Jenna Hutchins in the 3200m. Let's compare the two on paper so far this season:

1600m

3200m

Allison Newman

5:00

10:57

Abby Faith Cheeseman

5:03

10:38

On paper, you would give the edge to Newman in the 1600 and Cheeseman in the 3200 but sometimes running at Eastern for a PR is different than running at State just to win so I'm curious how these two runners respond to each other since they have little familiarity with each other up to this point. The just see times on a paper with very little insight on each other's racing strategies.
