Field is Back: Coffey Has Big Day at TN Throws Classic

It was a great day to have a throws-only meet at Brentwood Academy with a select group of high school athletes from five states taking advantage of a rare opportunity to compete in this pandemic-impaired outdoor season.

After temperature checks and health screening questions were completed and social distancing and COVID-19 prevention guidelines were reviewed, it was time to throw!

Missouri Odessa High School graduate and Belmont signee Rebekah Stucker won the girls discus with a best mark of 145-3.

And then it was time for the fireworks to begin.

Eager to make his mark on Tennessee throwing history, University of Tennessee signee Skylar Coffey established the state's all-time best high school discus mark with an amazing toss of 201-00.

This ranks as the 2020 US # 2 mark in this the pandemic-shortened outdoor season and is a near 13-foot improvement over Skylar's previous PR of 188-3 established when he claimed gold at last year's state championship.

After discus, it was on to the shot put. Stucker again claimed a win on the girls side with a throw of 42-6.

Next it was Coffey's time to try to put together one of the all-time-greatest discus/shot performances in state history, and he did not disappoint. On his final attempt he hit 62-9 (TN # 4 all-time best, 2020 US # 5) - a 7+ foot improvement over his previous PR of 55-5.25 set during his 2019 state championship win.

There were numerous personal best marks set during the meet by other throwers.

However, the most inspiring takeaway may have been seeing the 5 seniors who participated having a chance to compete in a sport they love after having their seasons taken away.
