Top Performers: Winders, Wilcox Impress

It was a busy weekend across the state of Tennessee.

The Mid-State Championship did not disappoint and the Trailblazer Classic was a great battle in Northeast Tennessee. Here are our top performers of the weekend.

Wilcox Runs Away with Mid State

For the second straight season, Landri Wilcox ran an impressive race to win the MSCCA Championships. The Cookeville sophomore took the win with an impressive time of 17:52. Wilcox has run under 18 minutes now in two consecutive races. She ran a new personal best at Jesse Owens in her 17:44 second place finish behind Sasha Neglia.

Wilcox is currently ranked as the third fastest runner in Tennessee this season behind Neglia and Science Hill freshman Jenna Hutchins. In the country, Wilcox sits at No. 15 among sophomore girls with her PR in Alabama a few weeks ago. Tennessee girls cross country continues to be very strong right now...especially among underclassmen. Between Wilcox and Hutchins, Tennessee has some young phenoms.

Winders, Bove & Ahlmeyer Run Fast Times at Mid-State

Silas Winders took home the individual title at the MSCCA Championship meet in Dickson. His winning time of 15:08 is the second-fastest mark run in Tennessee this season. Not far behind the Henry County junior was Centennial's Davis Bove, who ran a TN No. 3 15:12. David Ahlmeyer was third in 15:18...and that's the fourth fastest time run by a Tennessee boy this season.

They all did it on a challenging course, too.

The Mid State championships have always provided a good barometer for where your team is heading into state competition. It's a lot like the KIL Championships or the Trailblazer Classic in East Tennessee. And we'll get to those in a moment too.

Finding success and running a fast time on such a challenging course, this late in the season, is very helpful. When you toe the line at Steeplechase, you're already confident in your ability to tackle a very tough course.

Daniel Boone Boys Impress on Home Course

The boys of Daniel Boone protected their home turf over the weekend. Boone won its 46th Annual Trailblazer Classic in Gray last Saturday, outscoring Morristown West by 35 points for the victory. They were led by a strong lead pack...specifically the duo of Connor Wingfield and Matt Huff. Wingfield, just a freshman, has had an excellent debut season. Boone raced senior Chance Bowman in the junior varsity race. The senior ran a 17:10 for the win.

Elsewhere at Trailblazer, Dobyns Bennett junior Sasha Neglia continued her momentum to pick up the individual win in the girls race. Neglia crossed the line with a 18:09, over a minute ahead of the second place finisher. Running out in front by yourself for that long can be challenging. But Neglia handled it well, conservatively navigating the tough course for an easy.
