NEW ORLEANS -- The Chattanooga women’s track team along with two individuals were named to the 2006-07 All-Academic teams the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Tuesday.
The Lady Mocs were ranked third on the list featuring 97 Division I teams with a team GPA of 3.460. National qualifiers Lanni Marchant (London, Ontario, Canada) and Kathleen Turchin (Sugar Hill, Ga.) received individual honors from the USTFCCCA.
“These athletes are dedicated to being students first,” UTC head coach Bill Gautier said. “Academics come first for them, so being conscientious goes hand-in-hand.”
Marchant, the Southern Conference Female Athlete of the Year, qualified for her second straight 10,000 meters at the NCAA National Championships. She claimed the 2006 SoCon Cross Country Runner of the Year honor for her individual title at the SoCon Championships and led the Lady Mocs to the team title. She was runner-up at the NCAA South Region Championships and earned a spot at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
Despite a stress fracture in her foot, Marchant claimed first place in the SoCon Indoor 5,000-meter run. Her outdoor season was more impressive, winning the SoCon Outdoor 5,000 and 10,000. Her winning time of 35:06.53 in the 10,000 broke a 17-year-old SoCon record in the event. Marchant ends her career as a 14-time All-SoCon performer in indoor, outdoor and cross country.
She was named Academic All-District IV this spring by the College Sports Information Directors of America and nominated for Academic All-America. The UTC Athletics Hall of Fame presented her the A.C. “Scrappy” Moore Award given to the student-athlete who best personifies the athletic department’s motto Success with Integrity through Academic Achievement and Community Service.
Marchant posted a 3.89 GPA and graduated in May with a degree in Economics and a minor in Pre-Law. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and will be attending the University of Ottawa Law School in the fall. She is a SoCon Commissioner’s Medal winner, conference All-Academic and on the Dean’s List each semester.
Turchin, reaching the NCAA Outdoor Track Championships for the second time in her career, reached the finals of the 5,000 meter run at the championships and finished 13th overall. She set a new school record in the event in the qualifying heat at the championships with a time of 16:19.74 breaking her previous school-record time by 19 seconds.
Turchin was a cross country All-America her freshman year and was the first UTC runner to be named SoCon Freshman of the Year in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. She is a 15-time all-conference athlete and a two-time league champion. She is a three-time NCAA outdoor track region qualifier and a three-time NCAA National qualifier in both cross country and outdoor track.
Turchin holds a 3.55 GPA in Nursing and will return for her senior year. She is a SoCon Commissioner’s Medal winner, conference All-Academic and on the Dean’s List each semester.
Brigham Young University (18) and Stanford University (15) had the most student-athletes on the 2007 All-Academic team.
415 student-athletes representing 117 Division I colleges and universities make up the All-Academic team.
The USTFCCCA honors Division I individuals for their academic and athletic achievements during the indoor and outdoor track season.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, one must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 and obtain an NCAA automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the most recent indoor championships or an outdoor regional qualifying mark in their respective event.
In the team rankings, The University of Arkansas Little Rock had the highest overall GPA (3.610), while Quinnipiac University (3.518) and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (3.460) rounded out the top three All-Academic teams.
In all, there were 97 Division I Women’s programs recognized as 2007 All-Academic Track and Field Teams. The Big Ten Conference led all conferences with a total of eight All-Academic teams.
The selection of the All-Academic Indoor and Outdoor Team’s of the Year award is based on a combination of athletic and academic achievements. The top honor goes to the team that has the best finish at the Division I Indoor and/or Outdoor National Championships and that also holds the highest cumulative GPA.
To be nominated, the team must carry a minimum 3.000 GPA.
