Thirteen State Meet Records Go Down At TMSAA Championships

Class AA Girls

Girls Discus

The previous record in this event was set in 2017 at 102-6 and on Saturday was broken by three separate throwers with West Collierville's Alexa Haynes coming away with the victory and the record. Haynes' toss of 108-7 was just a foot better than Robertsville's Alani Mitchell who threw 107-7 which was a little over a foot better than T.A. Dugger's Liahna Nave who threw 106-3. Haynes would go on to win the shot put competition as well. With Haynes and Mitchell both returning next year, I expect to copy and paste a similar report into next year's article.

Girls 400m Dash

Haynes' teammate who will also be returning next year is Kylie Walden who set a new state record in the 400m dash at 58.60. The previous record was set last year by former West Collierville athlete Kennedi Woods who is currently ranked 8th overall in the state as a freshman at Collierville High School. Are you starting to sense a trend here? West Collierville won the girl's team championship for the second year in a row increasing their point total from 71 to 90 year over year and based on what we know about who is returning, I don't anticipate they'll be relinquishing that title anytime soon.

Girls 4x400m Relay

Of all the records set yesterday, I feel like this one has the potential to last the longest. The girls from Grassland Middle School ran 4:07.53 lowering the record in the event set last year by over five seconds. The team consisted of Izumi Wakatsuki, Aubry Gates, Siena Thompson, and Liv Garrett. The time would rank them 21st overall in the high school rankings and would put them at the top of two high school classifications and second in another. Just absurd.
