Tennessee State Indoors

Boys Track

Boys 800m Run

As highlighted earlier this preseason, based on historical averages Christian Brothers has the infrastructure to put a top 4x800m team and this year is no different. Kaleb Smith won the 800m run Sunday morning with a new indoor/outdoor PR of 1:55.86 which is a full second faster than his best from last outdoor season. He sat behind Jarryn Lowe for most of the race and overtook him in the final 100. Lowe would maintain second with a 1:56.74.

Boys 1 Mile

The last time Keegan Smith ran at Vanderbilt he was coming off a two week vacation in Italy and, by the standards we are accustomed to Smith running, still looked like he was on vacation. That was on the case over the last two weeks after a big victory in the 800m at Eastern Indoors and on Sunday in the 1 Mile run. Smith front ran the entire race outlasting a deep field that included Luke Thompson and Owen Clemons. His 4:14 is dead on where he ended last season but in a deeper field at a national meet up coming he's looking to go sub 4:10.

Boys 60m Dash

We've already profiled John Sherman this preseason as a "Runner To Watch" so there's not much else to say about the Senior from Lavergne but the main difference between now and that interview is he can call himself Tennessee Indoor State Champion. The Senior from Lavergne won the 60m Dash with a 6.85 which was a .12 second improvement over him previous best narrowly lowering the freshly set meet record by .01.

Boys 200m Dash

The runner that held had just set the meet record was Jaxon Hammond who ran 6.86 in prelims. He was clearly disappointed with the runner up finish in the 60m final but flipped the script later in the 200m final holding onto the top seed he earned in qualifying running in a 21.94 in finals narrowly edging out second place by 21.96. Sub 22 is uncharted waters for the Senior from Christian Brothers but he's done it twice in his only two races at the distance in 2023 so we're just going to have to get used to it.

Boys 400m Dash

The same is going to have to be said about Hudson Allain who finished second to Hammond in 21.96. It was his first time under 22 but that's not why we interviewed him. The 200 came after his win the 400m running a 48.27 beating the defending state champion for the second time this indoor season and taking over the #1 time in the state in the process. Allain ran a total of 1200 race meters on Sunday and was able to bounce back each time which is a good sign as we look ahead to the pace of the state meet will have in May.

Boys 60m Hurdles

When you place 8th at the state meet in an event with the likes of Tharp, Covington, and Bernard, it's hard to stand out so I was a little hesitant to respond when Isaac Iosia messaged our Instagram account a few weeks ago with something along the lines of "look out for me this season." I can honestly say at the time I wasn't but after Sunday he has my undivided attention. The senior for Cleveland won the 60m Hurdles lowering his TN #2 time from 8.37 to 8.24 and beating out the TN #1 ranked runner, Aiden Carter, in the process. These two are going to be major players in the highs this outdoor season and this was a solid getting to know you race as they likely won't have much crossover in outdoor racing until May.

Boys 2 Mile Run

There are big shoes to fill at Daniel Boone after Levi Streeval and Connor Wingfield swept the open distance events last May but Alexander Quackenbush looks in position to fill them. He won the 2 mile run on Sunday with a new PR of 9:24. After conversion, that's a slight improvement on his performance in the distance from his cross country post-season time trial. With indoor not being their focus, this is still a pretty good baseline time to head into outdoor season with.
