At the beginning of the season, we wrote how with the graduation of Connor Henson, this individual title was up for grabs and indeed it is. We expected the top returners highlighted in that article Drew Johnson and Austin Cason to be in the mix as they are but we did not anticipate the meteoric rise of Sammy Mohamed and the emergence of previously unknown Conner Carter. Mohamed was highlighted earlier this month as the most improved runner for the class of 2023 since freshman year but if you look at an even smaller timeframe, he has dropped from 17:27 to 16:12 in just a season. Carter essentially came out of no where as you can hear about in our feature interview here. This is uncharted territory for each of theses seniors and I anticipate the first mile to be a feeling out process before one or two trickle away and one emerges as the champion.

Full Division II Class A Boys Team Rankings

This is where there is a disconnect between what we see on paper and what actually happens conflict. Columbia Academy did not qualify for state as a team as they placed 4th in the Middle Region Qualifier. So to give us somewhat of a better picture of how the top teams stack up, they've all run on Sanders Ferry at one point this season or another. Here's their team average and scoring split of their top five times this season in Hendersonville.

  • CAK: Average 18:52, Split 2:39 (Saturday Light Fever Only)
  • USN: Average 17:54, Split 2:12
  • DCA: Average 17:58, Split 2:26
  • BGA: Average 18:15, Split 2:23
  • HA: Average 19:43, Split 4:06 (Coleman Midgett Only)

This give a little more clarity on a common course with some disclaimers. USN, DCA, and BGA all had the luxury of racing the course multiple times this season and later in the season that CAK or HA did. Should be a solid competition though.
