Signal Mountain, Greeneville: Why They Won D-I Class AA

Greeneville Boys

First Since 2014

I've pointed to this interview in a previous article but since I didn't have an opportunity to speak to Coach Blalock again after his team won on May 24th I'll go ahead and plug it in here again to elaborate further about what circumstances were unfolding as we were speaking.

By this point in the day, Jaden Stevenson had run 10.53 to place 2nd in the 100m dash losing only to a runner from Bullis School, Dustin Brock Moore Jr. had won the 110m Hurdles becoming the first hurdler in the state to run under 14 seconds, and the 4x100m relay team won the event with a 42.59. In Class AA, they appeared to have too much fire power to be able to be challenged for the state title and while that ultimately turned out to be the case, it did not come with some adversity. During the 4x100m relay, Moore Jr. ran the second leg and hurt his knee in the exchange to third, the same knee that sidelined him for all of his junior season. While talking to Coach Blalock in the interview above, Dustin is in the training tent with ice and crutches about 10 feet to my right and things at the time did not look promising. Fortunately, the injury was not entirely season ending but it was still a blow to the team aspirations. Moore didn't return to hurdling but was able to recover to a point where he could run the 4x100m again which freed up Stevenson to focus on the open 400m as one of his four events and it paid off.

This the final results of the team competition played out in the opposite way the girls did. The Green Devils scored big in their limited number of events and Munford scratched and clawed their way for every other point but ultimately ran out of events to score in but Munford's finish here illustrates why love and why we needed this classification in the first place. In 2021, the Cougars qualified ZERO male athletes to the state meet.  In 2022 they brought a busload of athletes and were able to post season's bests in eight of their nine performances on Tuesday. It was a valiant effort but with Stevenson winning the sprint triple crown with counterpart Mason Gudger finishing right behind him in both the 100m and 200m dashes the speed was too much to keep up with.

Stevenson and Gudger go 1-2 in the 100m dash scoring 18 points for Greeneville. Junior Braxton Sharp of Munford was able to nab 6 points finishing third with his fastest time of the season at 10.99.

By the time the 4x400m rolled around, the point scoring was complete as neither team had a team entered. This was the second title for Greeneville in school history, their first coming in 2014. If we're counting points heading in to next season, Munford looks to be in better position with Sharp, Ryan Coley, and others returning for the Cougars. Congratulations to Coach Blalock and the Green Devils.
