Without A Winders: End Of A Decade Of Distance Dominance

Without Winders

If you've been around Tennessee distance running at any time in the last decade, one name has become synonymous with the sport. Since 2012, no state cross country championship has been contested without a Winders child racing at the event. Eldest sibling Javan started the tradition in 2012, younger brothers Titus and Silas continued it, and last fall Dinah became the last to cross the finish line for the final time. Throughout that stretch the amount of accolades the family amassed are many but here are just a few career from each highlights to help illustrate their achievements:

  • Javan Winders - Class of 2016: 2x All-State Cross Country, 4x All-State Outdoor Track and Field, State Indoor Runner-Up 3200m
  • Titus Winders - Class of 2018: 2017 Cross Country State Champion, Foot Locker Nationals Qualifier, #6 All-Time 3200m Run (State Champion 2018)
  • Silas Winders - Class of 2020: 2019 Cross Country State Champion, 2x Foot Locker Nationals Qualifier, 3200m State Champion (Outdoor 2019, Indoor 2019, 2020)
  • Dinah Winders - Class of 2022: 3x All-State Cross Country, 4x State Outdoor Qualifier, 3x TMSAA 1600m State Champion, 2x 800m Champion

With Dinah's graduation, I thought it was fitting to discuss this era with the mastermind behind all of this, father and coach of the Henry County Patriots Lance Winders who will be retiring from teaching and coaching this summer.
