Case Study: Follow Up on Current Two Class System

2021 Reclassification:

So what's going to happen next December? Due to a fortuitous encounter and conversation I was able to have with a TSSAA Assistant Executive Director, his belief is there will be three scenarios presented to be voted on next December.

Option 1:
No Change. 6 Classes Football, 3 Classes "everyone else."

Option 2:

5 Classes Football, 3 Classes "everyone else."

Option 3:

6 Classes Football, 4 Classes "everyone else."

Ultimately there is a tug of war between Football having six classes while your other major team sports (Basketball, Baseball, Softball, etc...) only have three. When push comes to shove, I feel like Option 2 or 3 is what will be adopted to help close that gap. But how will either of these affect our sports?

Assuming Cross Country and Track and Field are included in the "everyone else," if three classes is adopted I believe combining A/AA as they were before 2017 would be the most likely outcome. The cutline would be around 1000. No real change to state qualifying would occur. We would still probably take 24 Teams to state in both classes and 16 qualifiers each to state per track and field event.

Option 3 would be most unfamiliar to our sport and the other Major Team Sports. In our conversation it was mentioned that for most, districts would become much smaller and would eliminate district tournaments and teams would advance straight to regionals eliminating a source of revenue. Of course, revenue is being considered with these sports.

As for us, a four class plan might look like this:

Enrollment Schools XC Qualifiers Track Qualifiers
Class A/AA 0-760 Bachman - Sycamore 16 8
Class AAA 761-1200 South Gibson - Ridgeway 16 8
Class AAAA 1201-2700 Lincoln Co. - Bartlett 16 8

Currently in Cross Country there are 48 teams that qualify for the state meet. In a 4 class system, this could also be the case and implemented very seamlessly. Just take the top 2 teams from each of the 8 region meets. Track is not as seamless. The current "Small Division" brings 16. Do they need to? Probably not. After all, a race at last May's Small Division Track Meet lasted 17 minutes and 30 seconds and no... it wasn't a 5k. As A/AA, bringing the top 2 from each East, Middle, and West Regional plus the next best 2 would be appropriate for this division. In AAA and AAAA, I believe eliminating "heats against time" would be a welcome change as well.

Ultimately, whatever happens next December, I hope whoever has the most influence in our community has a seat at the table this time. These are just my opinions though, hope to hear yours on the discussion board.
