Matthew McMillan: Why I Chose Tennessee

Brentwood Academy senior Matthew McMillan is headed to Rocky Top.

The Eagles distance runner went in depth with us about why UT was the right choice for him, and what he's looking forward to the most about being a Vol.

What was the deciding factor in your decision?
During my visit to UT, I felt like I was at home, and everything felt natural to me. The team was so inviting and welcoming, and truly made an effort to get to know me. The nature and unity of the coaching staff and team was something special that I didn't see anywhere else.
What impressed you on your visit?
From the moment I stepped on campus, I was impressed with Tennessee. The coaches were so welcoming from our first meeting, and created a wonderful feel throughout the whole visit. Meeting with the academic coaches and advisors, touring the business school, and seeing the athletic facilities made me fall even more in love with Tennessee.
How did you like the coaches?
The coaching staff at Tennessee is absolutely amazing. Coach Foster and Coach Sullivan truly made me feel welcome and wanted, and evidently show their passion for the sport and their athletes.

What's your favorite part about Tennessee?
My favorite part about Tennessee is the family feel that the whole program provides. The guys on the team and the whole coaching staff really work as a unit and care about each other, which is really inviting.
Have you decided on a major?
As of now, I think I would like to double major in Supply Chain Management and Entrepreneurship, both of which are strong at UT.
What goals do you have for the track season?
I would like to run as close to 9:00 as possible in the 3200m and 4:10 in the mile. We are running a few very competitive meets this coming track season, so it will be fun having good opportunities to run fast.
What other schools did you consider?
I was blessed to have multiple wonderful schools as an option, coming down to UT, Alabama, Furman, and Georgetown.
What was the most important factor you considered in making your decision?
Throughout my search, I tried to find the right fit by balancing academics and athletics. I wanted to find a school where I would be able to pursue my academic goals, while having a good fit athletically. Tennessee's Supply Chain Management and Entrepreneurship program really impressed me, along with the perfect athletic fit.
