From one Fighting Irish to another.
Knoxville Catholic senior Jake Renfree has announced his college decision. He's headed to South Bend to continue his athletic career at Notre Dame. The announcement was made via the Knoxville Catholic Track and Field Twitter account on Monday.
Renfree had an outstanding cross country season in 2017, bursting on to the national stage with his fifth place finish at Foot Locker Nationals. But it all started in 2016 when Renfree nearly edged out teammate Georde Goodwyn (now running at UT-Knoxville) for a state cross country championship.
On that day, Renfree set a new personal best with a 16:13. And on the challenging Steeplechase course, that's awfully impressive.
Ever since that meet, Renfree has run as well as anyone in Tennessee over the past two seasons. This year has been no different. Renfree has run sub-16 all four times he's toed the line in 2018. His season best came a month ago when he won the prestigious Trinity Invitational in Louisville.
The two-time state champion joins former Brentwood Academy standout Carter Cheeseman in a strong recruiting class headed to South Bend next season.
