A Case Study on the Current Two Class System

3 More years?

The definition of classification is simple. It is "the action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics." With enrollment number being the single quality by which schools are classified, I do not believe this new two class system promotes competitively robust classifications. Instead, athletes ranked 271 in their event qualify for the state meet while athletes in the same event who were in the top 40 were left at home and showing up with 5 runners to Region Cross Country meet is also good enough regardless of performance.

As I said on page 1, "When approved a lot of coaches expressed their skepticism with how and why this decision was made." A coaches meeting was held at last year's state track meet with TSSAA officials to discuss which option was best and how we can fix this situation before all 4 years of this classification cycle run their course. A contingent of 40+ coaches voted and the outcome was the classification system you see below:

3-Classification Adjusted and Split Evenly by Participating Schools

What is the solution though? Should we go to 3 classes? Should we have a better enrollment cut line between the 2 classes? Whatever you think, the bottom line is this... If when the TSSAA decides classifications for sports and they give individual consideration for how they divide football, volleyball, wrestling, and soccer classifications then as a running community we would like the same kind of individualized due diligence taken into consideration when dividing classes for our sports.
