Athletes to Watch: Division I Small Schools

Throws

Elijah Simmons

Simmons is one of the headliners for all the throwing events for the week. He's going to be hard to beat. And he's a big reason why Pearl Cohn is the favorite to win the division as a team.

Simmons boasts a 53-02.5 seed in the shot put. That's the best in the division by nearly six feet. In the shot put, he comes in as the top-ranked competitor at 156-10. Both of those marks should secure 20 points for the Firebirds.

Simmons is ranked as the second-best discus thrower in the state of Tennessee. And when Kentucky signee Joshua Sobota is the only guy in front of you, you know you're doing something right. The Pearl Cohn junior will be the man to beat in every division next season.

Abi Tate

Alvin C York's Abi Tate is seeded to score 18 points at this year's state meet. The senior has a 36-01.5 sectional mark in the shot put and a 116-05 mark in the discus.

Tate has a twelve foot lead on the field in the discus, where she's heavily favored. She's thrown 125-11 this season, which ranks her fourth in any classification in the state of Tennessee. Tate has also thrown 36-5.5 in the shot put, which will make that competition quite interesting.

Tate hasn't lost a single discus competition all season. And she's only had one second place and one third place finish all year in the shot put.

Jataya Wilson

Alcoa's Jataya Wilson is another name to watch in the throwing events. The junior from Blount County has thrown 37-09.5 this year, which nearly gives her a two foot advantage on Tate, who's seeded second. Wilson also launched a 39-08.75 mark at the Volunteer Track Classic earlier this season.

Wilson is the No. 8 shot putter in the state at any classification this season.
