PREVIEW: Races to Watch at the Vanderbilt Invite

The 2018 Vanderbilt High School Invitational promises to be a good one.

From the short sprints to the mile, there's a ton of good talent in this meet. Starting with a potential high school record attempt in the 400 meters.

And on the distance side, a former Middle Tennessee standout is coming home to race some of the Southeast's best distance runners.

Carter Cheeseman, a former state champion for Brentwood Academy, will be back in Nashville to race the mile. Cheeseman moved to Texas this past fall, enrolling at Fort Worth Christian. This past season, he tore it up. Cheeseman finished sixth at foot locker nationals. And he comes in with a seed time of 4:14.

But he's not the only one coming in with that mark. Sean Prendeville, a senior from Round Rock Cedar Ridge in Texas, ran 4:13 last season in his last race of the outdoor season. Last month, he won the Arkansas HS Invitational in 4:19.

The local competition is fantastic as well. Jake Renfree, Carter Coughlin and Titus Winders were all at Foot Locker this past December as well. And they'll round out this talented field.

Renfree made his debut a few weeks ago in Johnson City, winning the 800-Mile double at the KYA Indoor Classic. Coughlin and Winders, on the other hand, will be making their season debuts on Saturday.

The boys mile will get started at 2:05 PM CT.

In the sprints, you can't discuss this meet without starting with Brian Herron.

He has dominated his competition all season. In fact, Herron has the top time in the country for 200 and 400 meters this season. He'll will compete in the first heat of the seeded competition of the 400 on Saturday around 1:30 PM CT.

The national record, set by Elzie Coleman in 2004, is in serious jeopardy. Herron is seeded at 46.01, and the national record currently stands at 45.92. There's a good chance we could see that fall on Saturday afternoon in Nashville.

In the early morning, multi-event athlete Sterling Lester will take to the track for the heptathlon competition. She's got a good chance to extend her lead at the front of the national leaderboard with a good performance on Saturday morning.

Lester's current performance of 3,423 points places her on the top of the national rankings. You'll want to tune in at 8 AM to watch her compete in the heptathlon.

Later in the afternoon, Lester will compete again in the 60m hurdles. And she'll do so against one of the top hurdles in the country, Tia Jones.

Jones currently sits third in the national rankings for the 60m hurdles. She's also No. 29 in America for the 60 meter dash. The hurdles will kick off at 11:30 AM CT, with finals scheduled for 2:25 PM.

At 3:10 PM, JP Vaught will headline a fast field of runners in the 200 meter dash. Vaught finished third at the KYA Indoor Classic earlier this season with a time of 22.34. Two weeks later, he broke that 22 second barrier, winning the Wildcat Indoor Classic in 21.91.

With Herron only running the 400m, Vaught has a good chance to take the 200m. He's also seeded highly in the 60m dash, coming in with a seed time of 6.93.

Saturday will also be the debut of Colin and Keaton Jones in the state of Tennessee this indoor season. The twin 800 tandem from Memphis finished second and third at the Arkansas High School Invitational earlier this season.

With a loaded field in the 800 on Saturday, we're expecting a big performance from those two.

This meet has a lot of big-time competitors. It's a deep field of talented athletes from across the Southeast and Texas.
