SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Appalachian State men’s and Chattanooga’s women’s cross country teams were chosen by the Southern Conference’s cross country coaches as the league favorites this season.
Appalachian State received nine first place votes for a total of 81 points. Furman had 66 points to come in second.Chattanooga, which received one first place, had 61 points. UNC Greensboro had 59 points for fourth place while Davidson had 53 points to place fifth. Elon and College ofCharleston tied for sixth with 34 points. The Citadel, Western Carolina and Wofford round out the men’s poll.
Phil Mitchell, last year’s Conference Champion and Southern Conference Runner of the Year leads the Mountaineers, looking for their third straight team title. Teammates Ryan O’ Keefe, Josh Houser and Blair Teal, all whom placed in the top 20 of last year’s conference championship, will also help.
Chattanooga returns the core of last year’s conference championship team and received eight first place votes for a total of 97 points. Davidson got three first place votes to tally 90 points. Appalachian State had 81 points for third and Elon got 75 points for fourth place. Furman had 61 points for fifth place and College of Charleston had 58 points for sixth. Western Carolina was seventh with 41 points while The Citadel and UNC Greensboro tied with 35 points each. Georgia Southern received 20 points and Wofford received 12 to round out the bottom of the poll
