2015 TRI-CITIES TRACK CLASSIC MOVES TO APRIL 3-4, 2015

Announcing the 2015 Tri-Cities Track Classic!

Mark your calendars for April 3-4, 2015 as Knoxville Youth Athletics and Tri-Cities Youth Athletics in cooperation with Science Hill High School host the third annual Tri-Cities Track Classic. Held on the nine lane oval in Kermit Tipton Stadium the Tri-Cities Track Classic will bring together top flight High School Track and Field competition from Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and beyond. Last years meet produced numerous top US high school performances and saw over 1350 athletes compete over two days.

Meet director Marty Sonnenfeldt explains the move to early April. “It’s pretty simple really”. “When NASCAR moved their March race to the weekend we would normally have competed on, we were left without hotels to house incoming teams”. “ We tried to make it work but ultimately we had to find a weekend that would accommodate the incoming teams”. “Fortunately, we found a weekend that did not create too many conflicts with other meets said Sonnenfeldt.

The Tri-Cities Track Classic will look once again to be added to "Bring Back the Mile's" prestigious National Calendar for 2015. This places the Tri-Cities Track Classic alongside nationally known meets as the New Balance Indoor Games and the historic 107th Millrose Games in New York City) Bring Back the Mile (BBTM) is a national movement featuring meets that seek to bring back to the forefront one of track and field iconic events - The Mile Run. Seemingly lost in the clutter of metric conversion to either 1500 meters or 1600 meters (high school) the mile remains the standard by which most judge middle distance proficiency. The Tri-Cities Track Classic will feature the Ray Flynn Mile named after ETSU's All-American, Olympian and 3:49 miler.

Sonnenfeldt has high hopes for 2015. “Last years meet saw us break through as a regional meet of significance”, says Sonnenfeldt. The Tri-Cities Track Classic has become a fixture on the national high school track and field circuit and a Go-To meet for those who seek top flight competition. No stranger to high caliber meets, Sonnenfeldt directed the venerable Volunteer Track Classic for nearly two decades, guiding the meet to national prominence. Recently he has brought national class high school competition to ETSU's Niswonger Invitational by including a high school division that has seen over 120 US top 30 marks set in the past five years (set for January 16-17, 2015) as well as establishing the first high school indoor meet at Vanderbilt University in February of 2014 (to be held January 31, 2015).
