Milligan Women\'s Indoor Track & Field Program Receives Buffalo Funds Five Star Awar

Coaches and Student-Athletes Recognized for Exhibiting Exceptional Character Values

OLATHE, Kan. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and Champions of Character founding partner Buffalo Funds present Buffalo Funds Five Star Awards for each of the NAIA's 23 championship sports. The Milligan (Tenn.) College women's indoor track & field program was recently awarded the Buffalo Funds Five Star Award for its dedication and implementation of the Champions of Character program's five core values: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. The Lady Buffs, who compete in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, are led by head coach Chris Layne.

"Character is very important in team dynamics by creating a balance. Each individual brings a variety of character traits to the team blending different types of personalities. People of character provide a positive atmosphere that encourages everyone to make good choices in all aspects of life and reflect the true spirit of competition," said junior Kortney Goulds. "The five core values allow all team members to work toward a common goal instead of selfish desires. Putting team goals and aspirations in perspective has allowed our team to be very successful not only during competition but also in the classroom."

The Lady Buffs strive for excellence in and out of competition. The student-athletes established a task force. The task force assists with athletic, academic and personal goals and helps drive progress on campus and in the local community. The group has given back in many ways to each facet of the Tennessee community, and in return, the team is energized because they know they are making a difference.

"Character traits that the team possesses embody the spirit of Milligan College. The success of the 'task force' depended on many different character traits coming together and sharing ideas in order to better not only themselves but also the campus, community and hopefully the world," said Layne. "Group interaction, which the entire team has had some part to play, has strengthened and inspired the team onto greater things because they saw what could be achieved when they work together. The 'task force' has been a revolution for our team and their many feats are admirable."
