In Limited Action On Friday, UT Women Qualify Two Athletes For Mideast Regional
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Sophomore Sarah Bowman and freshman Lynne Layne didn t waste any time Friday, earning NCAA regional qualifying marks on the first day of the 2007 outdoor campaign as the University of Tennessee women competed in seven events at the Wake Forest Open at Kentner Stadium.
Bowman, an All-American indoors this season in the mile run and with UT s distance medley relay, earned herself a ticket to the NCAA Mideast Regional in Columbia, Mo., on May 25-26 by clocking a victorious time of two minutes, 6.12 seconds in the 800-meter run. The Warrenton, Va., native finished more than two seconds ahead of unattached runner-up Inez Turner (2:08.78).
Layne, from New Rochelle, N.Y., also had a successful outdoor debut, logging a career-best readout of 11.67 seconds in the prelims of the 100 meters to qualify for the regional meet. Her effort was second-fastest of the qualifiers for Saturday s final at 2:10 p.m. Eastern Time.
It was good to get a couple of qualifiers and an event winner, UT Head Coach J.J. Clark said. Sarah Bowman picked up right where she left off indoors with her performance today. Lynne Layne was gaining momentum at the end of the indoor season, and she showed that she is continuing that outdoors.
Sophomore Pavi Elle Tiki James (Miami, Fla.) also advanced to the final round in her event today, the 100-meter hurdles. James covered the distance in 14.11 seconds to finish third in heat three and third-best of those advancing to Saturday s noon money race.
Other performances worthy of note included freshman Kelly Parrish (Ocala, Fla.) taking ninth in the 5000 meters at 17:40.16 and junior Amara McKell (Nashville, Tenn.) finishing 12th in the javelin with a fling of 120 feet and one inch.
Overall, we had good weather and some good performances on opening day, Clark said. Some athletes were performing for the first time and trying to get the cobwebs out. We ll come back tomorrow and try to keep the ball rolling.
Tennessee s first action Saturday starts at 9 a.m., when junior Shanna Dickenson (Cincinnati, Ohio) takes part in the hammer throw. The final event of the meet is the 4x400m relay at 5 p.m.
