The Houston boys cross country team made a statement today about 2005 being a rebuilding year. Led by Ted Rose, who won comfortably with a 15:27 clocking on the Shelby Farms course, the Mustangs scored early and often while easily beating second and third place White Station and Central under perfect conditions. Today's meet underscored how far the "new" Houston team has come since August and suggests that they won't be giving up their state championship crown without a fight.

In the girls meet, White Station weathered an almost DNF bonk by one of their top 5 runners but still managed a win over Houston and Collierville in an event that was highlighted by stellar individual performaces. The meet recorded three of the top times in the state this year, and White Station's Virginia Hine took advantage of teammate Rita Jorgensen's uncharacteristic off day to overtake her in the last 150 meters to win in 17:45. Renae Van Wyhe of Collierville tracked the the first two finishers all the way, but her 17:53 only got her third place.
