Ty Brown Races Into Contention

In our preview for Saturday Light Fever, the question was posed if a male runner from lower class of Division II would emerge as a contender from the first 5k of the season and though Jack Fruin of USN ran an outstanding time for a freshman in the Silver Division, I'm not sure he's ready to be in that conversation just yet this year. In the smaller classification of Division I though, a contender did make a very strong statement. Central Magnet's Ty Brown placed third on Saturday with a time of 15:59 improving his personal best by almost thirty seconds. Brown returned this season as the #2 finisher from the state meet last year and #5 in the overall class rankings. By no means was Brown not going to factor into how the medals were distributed in November but after Signal Mountain's Joshua Pote, the top ranked returner and top returning finisher, swept both the 1600m and 3200m last spring, it was hard to see someone, this early, make the gulf between him and the rest of the field appear smaller but Brown definitely caused me to recalibrate my preseason expectations.
