TSSAA Reclassification
A lot of people read the article on the announcement of the dates for the Cross Country State Championships but some may not realize yet their team has moved classifications. What used to occur every four years fortunately now occurs every two. This is a welcome change considering all the people moving to Tennessee and the growth occurring in certain areas of the state outpacing others. If you want to see the official release by the TSSAA you can click here. For your convenience, here are the teams we identified as moving up or down a classification for this cycle.
- Cross Country Teams Moving Up To AAA: East Hamilton, Fred J. Page, Knoxville Halls, Munford, Portland High, Spring Hill, Lincoln Co.
- Cross Country Teams Moving Down To AA/A: Franklin Co., Station Camp, David Crockett
- Track Teams Moving Up To AA: Lakeland Preparatory, Alcoa, Heritage (White House), Loudon, Memphis Rise, Pearl Cohn, Power Center, Sycamore, Watertown
- Track Teams Moving Down To A: Liberty Creek
The track teams moving down to AAA and AA are the same as cross country. There are likely more that are moving down to Class A but didn't write as many down when auditing. I also didn't notice any changes to Division II but if there are please submit those as needed.
Notes & Observations
- Class AA for track is going to be a very interesting competition this cycle. Championship programs like Pearl Cohn and Alcoa move in while Munford and Page move out.
- Hillwood will close this year and the student population and staff will move to James Lawson High School. The team page has been noted to reflect that. It remains in Class AA.
- There was a lot of fluctuation in Regions 7 and Region 8 for Class AA/A Cross Country. TSSAA moved a lot of teams out of Region 7 and over to Region 8 I assume for competitive balance.
- Liberty Creek opened last year with a projected total that put them in Class AA but the actual student population count this year moved them down to Class A for track. The campus pulled a lot from Station Camp which almost moved down from AAA to AA.
- Kirkwood opens this year in Clarksville and will immediately enter class AAA.
- Page moves up to Class AAA adding another quality program to Region 6 for Cross Country. Nolensville moves from Section 2 into Section 3 with the rest of the Williamson County schools.
These changes are now reflected in our rankings from the top down to regions. We have not updated the breakdowns of Sub-Sections or Districts as most have not been defined yet. Once they are, please submit as needed. Here are some hyperlinks to help you digest and audit these changes.
