Preview
Normally, at some point over the season we would have some crossover between the top teams in the division to give us a baseline comparison. That is not the case in Division II Class AA for boys. At no point have any of the top five ranked runners or any of the top three ranked teams been on the same course at the same time. There has been some crossover with courses but ultimately what we see on paper is all we have to go off of and what we have to go off of points to deja vu.
As a freshman, Keegan Smith won the state title with a 15:29. His one trip to Sanders Ferry during his sophomore season saw him drop his personal best at the course to 14:53 which is the fastest any Tennessean has ever run on the course. The finisher behind him last year was Luke Thompson who again looks to be his next closest challenger. Whether or not anyone will challenge Smith remains to be seen. After the first half mile of 2021's championship, Smith held a 40 meter lead over the field and expanded that to a 24 second victory by the end of the race. I feel like we'll know whether or not anyone will try to match his pace for the first mile or if the field will cede the individual victory in hopes of a team title.
The team title currently belongs to McCallie and has for the last three seasons and does not appear likely to transfers owners just yet. While the Blue Tornados and Brentwood Academy have not raced head to head this season, they have raced on the same course: Oakville. Here's a side by side comparison of McCallie at Jessie Owens and BA at the Oakville XC Invitational last week.
McCallie | Time | Time | Brentwood Academy |
Jack Bowen | 15:29 | 15:27 | Luke Thompson |
Hugh Carlson | 15:30 | 15:29 | Carter Johnson |
Nate Armstrong | 15:57 | 16:16 | Sam Widmaier |
Evan Simpson | 15:57 | 16:47 | Sean Smith |
Grady Outlaw | 16:01 | 17:05 | Parker Wells |
Harry Carter | 16:07 | 17:06 | Roderick Cormier |
Ward Richey | 16:51 | 17:23 | Harrison Chapman |
This table doesn't even begin to scratch the surface of how deep McCallie actually is. On the season they have 16 runners that have run under the seventeen minute mark for 5k. The next highest total in their Division are BA and Christian Brothers who both have six. It's not beyond the realm of possibility BA, CBHS, or Knox Catholic can pull an upset but there just isn't very much variability in a field of 120 runners if someone has a bad day with the back end depth of McCallie.
