Ruston's Lily Garrett Commits to Tennessee!

LILY GARRETT SHARES A FEW MOMENTS WITH HER RUSTON TEAMMATES BEFORE THE DISTRICT 2-5A MEET

      Ruston's Lily Garrett, who the 2021 Gatorade Athlete of the Year Award for Cross Country, announced in a social media post that she is committed to the University of Tennessee. This comes after Garrett took an official visit to Rocky Top this weekend. 

      "Feeling so blessed and excited to announce that I have committed to the University of Tennessee?? Thank you to my family, coaches and friends for the support and the ability to get here. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me in Tennessee. Go Vols! #GBO #RockyTop"

      The post appeared on Garrett's Instagram and Facebook account about 2pm on Monday afternoon.

      Garrett was the 2022 LHSAA State outdoor champion in the 3200m (11:12.12). She finished as the runner-up in the 3200m at the 2022 LHSAA State Indoor Meet with a time of 11:06.27. Garrett won her first state championship at the 2021 LHSAA Class 5A State Cross Country Meet with a time of 18:08.30. 

        She opened up her 2022 cross country season by winning The Opener in Clinton, MS. Garrett ran a 5k time of 18:50.23, which broke the meet's course record. 

       Garrett and her family weren't the only ones excited in Ruston Monday afternoon. Garrett's Ruston High teammates and coaches were excited as well. This included Ruston cross country head coach Dustin Cochran.

         "I'm just really happy for her," Cochran said. "She has come a long way in so many different aspects. I'm excited to see how she progresses at Tennessee. I'm wearing my Go Orange pin on my shirt all week."
